Animal shelter and rescue directors know that winter brings cooler weather, which can create stress for some animals. Directors should let their volunteers know how vulnerable these animals are during this time and how much they rely on their care.
Six tips for protecting animals in shelters and rescues:
1. Educate volunteers
Schedule training sessions for volunteers that teach them winter safety tips for animals in shelters and rescues. In return, educated volunteers provide better care.
Making training mandatory gives long-term volunteers a chance to share their tips and experiences.
2. Limit time outside
Many animals at shelters and rescues cannot regulate their temperatures in extreme temperatures. They can be taken out for a break but should be brought back inside to stay warm.
3. Stay attentive to the animals
Pay attention to the animals. After being brought in from outside, monitor them for signs of hypothermia, including shivering, whining, or weakness. They should also have their paws checked for frostbite. Any signs of hypothermia or frostbite should be brought to the attention of a veterinarian.
4. Be prepared for storms
Pay attention to your local forecasts as severe weather is predicated days in advance. When predicted, plan so you can provide the necessary care to the animals in your shelter or rescue. This includes having plenty of food and water for them.
5. Have an emergency plan
Having an emergency winter weather plan can be valuable depending on where you are located. Have a meeting with your volunteers to discuss what measures need to be taken in the event of severe winter weather. For example, how will animals get around if there is a foot of snow? Who will be responsible for checking on them? Should foster parents be on standby? Planning can save you from stressing out later.
6. Have a generator
Having a generator is beneficial as it can keep a building heated and animals warm during a power outage. It is never too soon to buy one and be prepared.
When volunteers understand how vulnerable animals are during winter and how much they rely on proper care, they’re better equipped to meet expectations, which results in improved animal care.
